1. Yak Yipoon - Somalense var. Somalense
It is originated from Tanzania, Somalia and Kenya. It's a giant breed with straight and high trunk, few branches on its sides, narrow leaves, no hair, lively green leaves, noticeable leaf line, small to medium flower size, pink or red flowers and yellow cone with 15-25 lines. It yields many flowers. If it faces drought, they shed their leaves and blossom at their sides and on main branches. It was reported to be seen in Africa. It was more than 5 meters high with the bottom larger than a 200-liter tank.
Adenium Somalense in Paisit farm is as follows.
1.1 Silver leaf Adenium Somalense
- Glossy silver leaves, no hair, tapering leaves, acuminate leaf tip.
- Strong and big trunk and branches.
- When flowering, many flowers bloom on the trunk and branches. Small flowers, pink or red flowers. Yellow lines on the cone. Shed leaves when blossoming.
- Big pod, big tapering seeds, Difficult to produce the pods.
- Seedlings are shiny silver leaves. There are big trunks and strong.
1.2 Spotted leaf Adenium Somalense
- Spotted leaves, yellow and green mixed with white, folded leaves, glossy leaves with no hair, tapering leaves and acute leaf tip.
- Strong trunk and branches, creamy white trunk.
- Fruitful flowers at the trunk and branches, small-sized flowers, pink flowers, pinkish petals, noticeable yellow lines on the cone, shed leaves when blossoming.
- Not hard to produce the pods, big pods and big tapering seeds.
- The seedlings are not spotted but grow fast and strongly.
1.3 Red branch Adenium Somalense
- Reddish brown trunk and branches, big and strong trunk.
- Tapering leaves, rounded leaf tip, green leaves, glossy leaves with no hair, median white noticeable leaf line.
- Fruitful flowers at the trunk and branches, small-sized flowers, pink flowers, reddish petals, noticeable red line on the cone.
- Hard to produce the pods, big pods, big and long tapering seeds.
- The seedlings grow fast and strong.
1.4 Wall Adenium Somalense
- The tip of the branch extends like a "Cristata" and blossoms on it, light pink flowers, red lines on the cone, very fruitful flowers, shed leaves when blossoming.
- Light green leaves, tapering leaves, median white noticeable leaf line.
- Creamy white trunk, rather weak branches.
- Generally not hard to produce the pods, medium-sized pods, tapering seeds.
- The seedling are like their mother plant, fruitful flowers and blossoming in cluster on the top.
1.5 Small leaf Adenium Somalense
- Glossy dark green leaves, small and tapering leaves, median white noticeable leaf line.
- Strong trunk and branches, grey and green trunk.
- Fruitful flowers, blossoming on the trunk and branches, small-sized flowers, pink flowers, dark pink petals, noticeable red lines on the cone, shed leaves when blossoming.
- Generally not hard to produce the pods, medium-sized pods, tapering seeds.
- The seedlings grow fast and strong.
1.6 White flowers Adenium Somalense
- White flowers. Fruitful flowers, blossoming on the trunk and branches,small-sized flowers, shed leaves when blossoming.
- Glossy dark green leaves, long and tapering leaves, median white noticeable leaf line.
- Strong trunk and branches, grey and green trunk.
- Generally not hard to produce the pods, medium-sized pods, tapering seeds.
- The seedlings grow fast and strong.
* These breeds of Adenium Somalense are giant breeds. They are usually grown big like a giant papaya tree. The higher trunk the more beautiful. The seedling with strong and perfect and correct characterized breed is selected to be grown as a big plant. Other seedlings used as rootstock. Adenium Somalense grow fast. Therefore, it can be used as a choice for large-scale plant cultivation and rootstock.
2. Somalense var. Crispum
It was originated in Africa, Somalia, Tanzania and Kenya. It is a small bush tree with a round caudex under the ground. It’s leaves are pointed and tapering. The edge of the glossy leaves is curvy. It has green, grey or brown leaves. The median leaf line is very noticable. The flowers are small. There are pink, red or multi color flowers. There are about 15 lines on the cone. It has a long blossom time. This breed was imported from the United States, Taiwan , etc. Nowadays, the breed has been developed and modified in and out the country. So there are many new hybrid flowers. These varieties are suitable for scion grafting.
3. Somalense Hybrids
They are the hybrids of Adenium Somalense and Obesum. In Thailand, they are planted together which resulted in a natural selection of beautiful flowers, strong trunk and caudex. Adenium Somalense hybrid grow fast. Therefore, it can be used as a choice for large-scale plant cultivation and rootstock.
There are also other hybrids of Adenium Somalense in our farm as follows:3.1 Paisit Somalense Hybrid (PSH)
Paisit Somalense Hybrid (PSH) is grown from seed. It's the 10-year-old hybrid of Adenium Somalense and Holland. The caudex's diameter is 70-80 centimeters long, 2.20 meters high. The caudex and leaves are green. The flowers are pink with red in the outer area. The flowers are medium-sized. It blossoms throughout the years. Pod bearing rate is moderate. The seeds are longer and bigger than original Adenium Somalense. The plants grown from seeds grow very fast, especially, the caudex growing faster than Holland at a double speed. There is usually one big trunk. The caudex and leaves are live green. The flowers are redish pink. It is very suitable to be used as stump for single cutting because of its fast growing caudex. It is also planted in the garden because of its strong brances.
3.2 Adenium Somalense with "Yak Ko"
Adenium Somalense with "Yak Ko" is believed to be mixed with Adenium Somalense and other breeds which are unknown but speculated to be "Multiforum." The basic structure of the trunk is like native Adenium. It grows very fast. The main tree is grown from cutting. The caudex's diameter is 7-8 inches long and it's over 2 meters tall. The most distinguished characteristic is that the leaves are glossy and green mixed with gray. And the meridian nerve is red. The shape of the leaves is like Adenium Somalense. The pink flowers are of medium size. The petal is pointed. The pollen tube grows out of the cone. It blossoms throughout the year. Its pod bearing rate is moderate. The seed is round. The baby plant that grows from seed grows very fast. The plants grown from seeds grow very fast, especially, the caudex growing faster than Holland at a double speed. The unique characteristic is that the trunk grows out of the bush, about 4-6 main branches off the caudex. The meridian nerve is red. It is suitable to be used as stump for bush tree (for multiple cutting) because the caudex grows fast and there are many main branches. It can also be planted in the garden because of its beautiful bush.
